Unchanging Foundation

Things around us can change at a sometimes dizzying pace and confusion seems to prevail in so many things. In recent days, the attacks on truth and reality are coming from every direction. What can a person to hold on to? God has provided the answer for us if we’ll only look. He is sovereign over everything, does not lie, is all-powerful, all-knowing, is just, is holy, is good, and He knows us better than we know ourselves and even with our flaws, still loves us enough to have His only Son come to earth and willingly die to pay the penalty for our sins. God has revealed Himself to us through His Word, the Bible. How sad that so many ignore the very thing that would help them to better understand Him as well as our world and our place in it. How tragic that some miss the abundant life Jesus has for them as well as live without His peace and joy because of assumptions they have made about what His Word teaches. What does God say through the psalmist about Scripture?

“The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul.
The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple.
The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart.
The commands of the Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes.
The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever.
The decrees of the Lord are firm, and all of them are righteous.
They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold;
they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the honeycomb.
By them your servant is warned; in keeping them there is great reward.
But who can discern their own errors? Forgive my hidden faults.
Keep your servant also from willful sins; may they not rule over me.
Then I will be blameless, innocent of great transgression.”

Psalm 19:7-13

Do we really think that this life is all there is? Then why do we hope for something more? Why do we seek justice and fairness? Why do we want our lives to mean something? Why do feel guilt? Why do we want others to be honest with us and feel betrayed when they are not? From a materialistic, evolutionist, atheist perspective – there is no answer for any of this. We fool ourselves if we do not acknowledge the existence of God. He has revealed Himself through His amazing Creation. Previous generations all over the planet recognized a Creator by what He had made. We fool ourselves if we think He is okay with our rebellion against Him and/or His Word. Or that we can live any way we want and expect Him to bless us. God created time, so is Himself outside of it. He created the material world and each of us, so has the authority to dictate policy. As the source of all that is good, only He can define what is good and what is evil. Out of His love for us and His compassion and mercy, He gave us the Bible so we could know Him and understand the way of salvation He has provided for us through Jesus Christ’s sacrificial death and glorious resurrection. We ignore or reject His revealed Word (the Holy Bible) at our own peril eternally as well as hinder our lives on earth, even for those who profess Him as Lord yet live according to their own wisdom. Psalm 96 does a good job of explaining God’s majesty:

“Oh, sing to the Lord a new song! Sing to the Lord, all the earth. Sing to the Lord, bless His name; Proclaim the good news of His salvation from day to day. Declare His glory among the nations, His wonders among all peoples. For the Lord is great and greatly to be praised; He is to be feared above all gods. For all the gods of the peoples are idols, but the Lord made the heavens. Honor and majesty are before Him; Strength and beauty are in His sanctuary. Give to the Lord, O families of the peoples, Give to the Lord glory and strength. Give to the Lord the glory due His name; bring an offering, and come into His courts. Oh, worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness! Tremble before Him, all the earth. Say among the nations, ‘The Lord reigns; the world also is firmly established, it shall not be moved; He shall judge the peoples righteously’. Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad; let the sea roar, and all its fullness; let the field be joyful, and all that is in it. Then all the trees of the woods will rejoice before the Lord. For He is coming, for He is coming to judge the earth. He shall judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with His truth.”

Psalm 96

When we live according to the teaching of God’s Word and keep Him in first place in our lives, trusting Him to guide us according to His perfect will, we experience personally His love, mercy, grace, compassion, provision, peace, strength, power, joy, and faithfulness. Even though the path is difficult and this world is broken because of sin, through trusting in the saving power of Jesus, we know our eternal future is secure. The more we know our precious Savior, the more we see that obeying His commands are not burdensome, especially since He gives us the power to obey through the gift of the Holy Spirit. Some commands can seem impossible (“Be holy as I am holy”, “Love your enemies”, and “Do not be anxious for anything”), and they are without His power. How incredible that He shares His power with us so we can walk with Him along our journey in this life with our sin no longer being a huge obstacle that is impossible for us to overcome. God’s Word and our adherence to it provides a firm foundation in our lives even when everything else is shaky and confusing. God never changes and is sovereign over the affairs of people and nations. There is so much comfort in that.

“God is not a man, that He should lie, Nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?”

Numbers 23:19

“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.”

James 1:17

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.”

Hebrews 13:8

“Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. Let no one say when he is tempted, ‘I am tempted by God’; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death. Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning. Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures. So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God. Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.”

James 1:12-22

Without a working knowledge of God’s Word, we are vulnerable to the lies and deceptions of the world, which is under the influence of Satan, the prince of this world and “father of lies”. He is a master of deception and is a murderer. God is the author of life and the source of wisdom, truth, and goodness. He has given us the gift of free will – may we use that freedom for our good (recognizing that His commands are for our good and His glory), and also for the good of others. If things seem to be falling apart in your life or if the crazy things going on around us are disturbing to you, perhaps God is trying to get your attention so you will get to the end of yourself, repent of your sins and turn to Jesus so He can save you. If things always seem to go well for you, is it be possible that Satan doesn’t see you as a threat? If we have a relationship with our Savior, it should change us. Others should be able to see Jesus in us. We are His ambassadors to a lost and dying world and from the fulfillment of biblical prophecies lining up all over the world, there may not be much time left before Jesus comes for His own. The tribulation will be horrific and we don’t want anyone to have to endure it. Hope is found in Jesus alone.

“Why do you not understand My speech? Because you are not able to listen to My word. You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.”

Jesus’ words in John 8:43-44

“Jesus answered them, ‘Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed’.”

John 8:34-36

“There is no neutral ground in the universe. Every square inch, every split second is claimed by God, and counterclaimed by Satan.”

C.S. Lewis

A firm and unchanging foundation is found in the Bible. God wants us to know Him, know what is true, and even to know what to expect in the future so we can be prepared. He seeks to bless those whose hearts are turned to Him. Those who read the Bible, study it, meditate on it, choose to obey it, and trust in Jesus alone for their salvation will have His peace that cannot be found in this world, grow in their relationship with their loving Creator, and have hope for the future in heaven with Him for eternity – where evil, sadness, and pain will not exist. Praise God – to Him be the glory!
