Evidence for Noah’s Flood

article by Connie Rice, site founder

Unfortunately, many people today are unaware of the extensive evidence that supports the Flood of Noah. In this case, ignorance is not bliss. If we don’t believe or trust the biblical account, it keeps us from asking critically important questions: “Why did God destroy people with a worldwide flood?” and “Did He say anything about a future judgment that would have an effect on humanity all over the world?” Let’s see how the Bible answers these questions and then look at some of the recent evidence (including a presentation and a film) that explores some of the evidences.

“The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. The Lord regretted that He had made human beings on the earth, and His heart was deeply troubled. So the Lord said, ‘I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created—and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along the ground—for I regret that I have made them’. But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord. This is the account of Noah and his family. Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked faithfully with God. Noah had three sons: Shem, Ham and Japheth. Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight and was full of violence. God saw how corrupt the earth had become, for all the people on earth had corrupted their ways. So God said to Noah, ‘I am going to put an end to all people, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. I am surely going to destroy both them and the earth. So make yourself an ark of cypress wood; make rooms in it and coat it with pitch inside and out.”

Genesis 6:5-14

“Beloved, I now write to you this second epistle (in both of which I stir up your pure minds by way of reminder), that you may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us, the apostles of the Lord and Savior, knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts, and saying, ‘Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation’. For this they willfully forget: that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of water and in the water, by which the world that then existed perished, being flooded with water. But the heavens and the earth which are now preserved by the same word, are reserved for fire until the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt with fervent heat? Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. Therefore, beloved, looking forward to these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, without spot and blameless; and consider that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation—as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given to him, has written to you,  as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which untaught and unstable people twist to their own destruction, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures. You therefore, beloved, since you know this beforehand, beware lest you also fall from your own steadfastness, being led away with the error of the wicked; but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and forever. Amen.”

Multiple areas of research support the biblical account of Noah’s Flood; various areas of evidence are provided by ICR (Institute for Creation Research) in their article, “Worldwide Catastrophic Evidence Is Everywhere”; one link is provided below for each area, but many other sources for each area are available:

  1. Tectonic plates and “Ring of Fire” volcanoes point to the biblical Flood account and “fountains of the deep” opening up as described in Genesis.
  2. Geological “anomalies” exist all over the world like polystrate fossils, hoodoos, wave rocks, petrified forests, “missing layers” (ie. Grand Canyon), that can’t be explained by uniformitarianism (based on Lyell’s idea that the present is the key to the past and that processes have been relatively static throughout earth history) –
  3. Fossil graveyards encompassing huge areas that include dinosaur, marine, mammal, and bird fossils all jumbled together (ie. Morrison Formation); a huge dinosaur kill zone covers 14 states in America as well as part of Canada and Mexico).
  4. The eruption of Mt. St. Helens in 1980 showed that huge geological changes can happen very quickly in a catastrophic event, including rapid erosion, thick stratified layers, and a canyon system was carved quickly after a small earthquake less than two years later – including one that was 1/40th the size of the Grand Canyon.
  5. DNA evidence – females backed up through moms, grandmothers, etc. to one woman who has been named Mitochondrial Eve; males have been backed up through dad, grandads, etc. to one man who has been named Y-Chromosome Adam.
  6. Mutation evidence – the work of Dr. John Sanford‘s research shows that mutation rates using actual scientific data rather than assumptions previously used are much higher than supposed; evidence points to a timeline that is in line with the biblical account and shows that humans will eventually have too many mutations and become unable to reproduce (human extinction).
  7. Noah’s Flood set the stage for the Ice Age – evaporations of warmer oceans from volcanic eruptions and ash in the atmosphere prevented warming from the sun, causing the snow and ice to not melt as it would have during what were normally warm seasons.
  8. “Living Fossils” numerous creatures and plants found alive today that were also in the fossil record, relatively unchanged (although some were larger in size) – ie. coelacanth fish, Gingko tree, dragonflies, horseshoe crab, and many more.
  9. “Cambrian Explosion” – creatures found in the earliest fossil record are found fully formed, some with complex features.
  10. Soft tissue in dinosaur fossils – researchers are finding non-mineralized bone, intact blood vessels & cells, bone cells, stretchy tissue, etc. – even fragile collagen.
  11. Carbon 14 found in dinosaur fossils, coal, diamonds, etc.; because of its decay rate, if things were really more than 10,000 years old – there would be no Carbon 14 left to measure.
  12. Flood stories all over the world – Nick Liguori researched flood legends and documented some of them in his book, “Echoes of Ararat: A Collection of Over 300 Flood Legends from North and South America”, (found so many that he published only two continents and will have to write sequels to cover the rest).

There is also an ABC article, “Evidence Noah’s Biblical Flood Happened, Says Robert Ballard: an acclaimed underwater archaeologist, explains the evidence”.

There is a “Creation Fellowship Santee” 1-hour presentation on evidence for Noah’s Flood from Dan Biddle, PhD, founder of “Genesis Apologetics” and technical producer of the new 2-hour film on Noah’s Flood that will be in theaters Weds & Thurs, March 20 & 21: see the trailer for “The Ark and the Darkness”. Bring anyone who is curious about existing evidence. God is trying to reach as many people as possible in these last days. May the Holy Spirit soften people’s hearts to the truth and open their minds to His amazing message of salvation to all who will believe and turn from their sin and turn to Christ. To repeat one of the verses above:

“The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.”
